Job Overview:

The Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Officer is responsible for ensuring that the workplace complies with health and safety regulations and promoting a safe and healthy working environment for all employees. This role involves developing, implementing, and overseeing safety programs, identifying potential hazards, and ensuring the proper use of equipment to minimize risks. The OHS Officer will work closely with management, employees, and regulatory bodies to ensure the highest standards of health and safety are maintained.

  • Develop, implement, and review workplace safety policies and procedures in line with health and safety regulations.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Ensure the proper implementation of safety protocols and procedures across all departments.
  • Conduct safety training and workshops for employees on topics such as safe work practices, emergency procedures, and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Raise awareness on health and safety issues and promote a culture of safety in the workplace.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of safety training and implement improvements as necessary.
  • Investigate accidents, near misses, and health-related incidents in the workplace.
  • Prepare detailed reports and recommend corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Ensure compliance with reporting procedures for work-related injuries, illnesses, and safety violations.
  • Ensure the organization complies with local, state, and federal safety regulations and guidelines.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation and industry best practices.
  • Act as a liaison with regulatory authorities during safety inspections and audits.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to identify risks and hazards in the workplace.
  • Recommend control measures to mitigate or eliminate risks and ensure safe working conditions.
  • Monitor and ensure proper use of equipment, machinery, and PPE to reduce the risk of accidents.
  • Promote employee health and well-being through wellness initiatives and preventative health programs.
  • Oversee the implementation of ergonomics programs to reduce workplace-related injuries.
  • Ensure appropriate first aid and emergency medical procedures are in place.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, audits, incidents, and training sessions.
  • Track and report on safety performance metrics to senior management.
  • Stay informed about new health and safety technologies, procedures, and equipment.
  • Recommend improvements to health and safety programs based on ongoing evaluations, audits, and employee feedback.

Requirements:

What you need to succeed (Qualifications, experience, skills, attributes)!
In the role of Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Officer, we are looking for Bachelor’s degree in same, or a related field. Professional certifications (e.g., OSHA, NEBOSH, or equivalent) are a plus. 4 – 5 years of experience in occupational health and safety management or a related field. Knowledge of health and safety regulations, risk management and safety programs. Strong communication skills and ability to conduct training sessions and promote safety awareness.

Attention to detail and ability to identify potential hazards. Ability to work under pressure and handle emergency situations effectively. Excellent organizational and time-management skills. Ability to collaborate with employees at all levels of the organization. Office-based with regular visits to work sites, factory floors, or other operational areas. Occasional requirement for evening or weekend work to conduct audits or address emergencies.
