Job Overview:

The Trade Compliance Manager (Team Lead) will be responsible for overseeing Skylink Distribution's trade compliance function, leading a team of compliance professionals, and ensuring the company adheres to global trade regulations, import/export laws, and industry best practices.

This role requires strong leadership, excellent understanding of trade compliance regulations, and the ability to implement strategies that minimize risk while optimizing efficiency in trade processes.

The manager will be the primary point of contact for regulatory matters and will lead the team in monitoring, auditing, and enhancing compliance programs to ensure adherence to both local and international standards.

  • Lead and manage a team of trade compliance specialists, setting clear expectations, performance goals, and individual development plans.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and guidance to team members, fostering a collaborative, motivated, and high-performance work environment.
  • Conduct regular team meetings to discuss regulatory changes, updates, and compliance challenges, ensuring the team remains informed and proactive in addressing issues.
  • Ensure that Skylink Distribution’s operations comply with all applicable import/export laws, customs regulations, and international trade agreements.
  • Monitor and review import/export activities to ensure full compliance with customs requirements, including classification, valuation, origin determination, and proper documentation.
  • Stay current on changes in trade regulations, including those from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the European Union (EU), World Trade Organization (WTO), and other relevant governing bodies.
  • Implement compliance controls to prevent any violations of trade regulations, fines, or delays that could impact the company’s operations or reputation.
  • Develop, implement, and manage trade compliance strategies and programs to ensure all operational and business activities comply with trade laws.
  • Collaborate with other departments (operations, legal, finance, logistics) to ensure the alignment of compliance practices within the broader organizational strategy.
  • Regularly review and update internal procedures, ensuring the company’s compliance with new regulatory requirements or changes in trade law.
  • Coordinate the development and maintenance of compliance programs and training for employees across departments.
  • Identify and mitigate risks associated with non-compliance by implementing best practices, conducting risk assessments, and proposing necessary adjustments to policies and procedures.
  • Lead internal audits and reviews of trade-related processes to ensure compliance with both international and domestic regulations.
  • Investigate and resolve any trade compliance issues, including discrepancies, violations, or challenges, and report findings to senior management.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for resolving customs issues and any potential disputes or audits from government agencies.
  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of all import/export documentation, including Customs declarations, bills of lading, invoices, and certificates of origin.
  • Oversee the preparation and timely submission of compliance reports, including any required documentation for regulatory bodies and internal stakeholders.
  • Prepare and submit periodic trade compliance reports to senior management and ensure that all activities are well-documented and auditable.
  • Maintain accurate records of compliance audits, regulatory filings, and customs documentation.
  • Develop and implement training programs to educate internal stakeholders (e.g., procurement, logistics, sales) on trade compliance best practices, risk management, and new regulations.
  • Provide continuous support and guidance to other departments, ensuring they understand compliance requirements and integrate them into daily business operations.
  • Identify knowledge gaps within the team and ensure ongoing professional development through certifications, training programs, and industry seminars.
  • Liaise with external compliance consultants, freight forwarders, customs brokers, and other trade partners to ensure a smooth and compliant operation.
  • Evaluate and monitor the performance of third-party vendors and service providers to ensure they meet Skylink Distribution’s compliance standards.
  • Work with legal counsel and external experts to address complex compliance challenges or disputes with regulatory authorities.

Requirements:

What you need to succeed (Qualifications, experience, skills, attributes)!
In the role of Trade Compliance Manager (Team Lead) Bachelor’s/ Master's degree in International Business, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Law, or related field. Professional certifications (e.g., Certified Customs Specialist, Certified Export Specialist) are preferred. 10 years of experience in trade compliance, customs brokerage, or related fields, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership or team management role.

Strong knowledge of global trade regulations, customs procedures, export controls, and trade compliance standards.

Hands-on experience with Customs systems, documentation, and compliance management tools. Experience with risk management, internal auditing, and regulatory reporting.
