Job Overview:

The Carpenter at the office is responsible for performing various woodworking and carpentry tasks related to the office's physical infrastructure. This includes constructing, installing, maintaining, and repairing furniture, fixtures, and other wooden structures as required. The Carpenter ensures all carpentry work is completed efficiently, to a high standard of quality, and in compliance with safety regulations.

The role is office-based, and the Carpenter will work within the office environment or related facilities. It requires standing, bending, lifting, and working with carpentry tools and materials. Some work may require working at heights or in tight spaces (e.g., installing fixtures or repairing overhead items).

The carpenter will typically work during regular office hours, but flexibility may be needed for urgent repairs or special projects.


What will you enjoy doing (duties/tasks)

  • Construct, install, and repair office furniture, including desks, cabinets, shelves, partitions, and other wood-based structures.
  • Create customized furniture or fixtures to meet specific office requirements and design needs.
  • Measure, cut, shape, and assemble wood materials to exact specifications.
  • Ensure that all carpentry work is completed according to blueprints or sketches.
  • Repair damaged wood structures such as doors, windows, frames, and furniture.
  • Install pre-fabricated furniture and fixtures in the office spaces as needed.
  • Perform regular inspections and maintenance of wooden furniture and structures.
  • Repair or refurbish old office furniture, bringing it back to functionality or improving its appearance.
  • Apply finishes such as stains, varnishes, and paints to wooden surfaces to enhance appearance and durability.
  • Sand, polish, and seal wood surfaces to provide a smooth and attractive finish.
  • Ensure wood finishes are applied in a safe and controlled environment, with proper ventilation and precautions.
  • Ensure all carpentry work complies with safety standards and regulations.
  • Adhere to health and safety guidelines while using tools and materials.
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure that work areas are clean, organized, and safe.
  • Follow proper waste disposal procedures for wood scraps and materials.
  • Identify and assess the need for carpentry repairs within the office, including door or window repairs, damaged furniture, or structural issues.
  • Troubleshoot and fix any carpentry-related issues in a timely manner to avoid disruptions to office operations.
  • Provide on-call support for urgent repairs during business hours.
  • Maintain carpentry tools and equipment, ensuring they are in good working condition.
  • Perform routine maintenance and basic repairs on tools.
  • Ensure proper storage and safety of tools when not in use.
  • Collaborate with office managers, interior designers, and other departments to understand and execute carpentry requirements.
  • Communicate with the facilities team regarding upcoming projects, repairs, or maintenance needs.
  • Work efficiently within a team, as well as independently, to meet deadlines and quality expectations.
  • Undertake special carpentry projects for the office, such as designing and building custom fixtures, desks, or cabinetry to meet specific office layout needs or improve space utilization.
  • Propose creative, functional carpentry solutions to enhance the overall design and functionality of office spaces.
  • Keep accurate records of carpentry projects, repairs, and maintenance activities.
  • Track inventory of carpentry materials and request supplies as necessary.
  • Document the cost of materials, tools, and labor for each project, ensuring that the office budget is adhered to.

Requirements:

What you need to succeed (Qualifications, experience, skills, attributes)!
In the role of Carpenter, High school diploma or equivalent; additional vocational training or certification in carpentry is a plus. Apprenticeship or work experience as a carpenter, particularly in commercial or office environments, is preferred.

Proven experience as a carpenter, with experience in woodworking, furniture building, and repairs.

Prior experience working in an office or commercial setting is advantageous.

Knowledge of carpentry tools, materials, and techniques. Proficiency in using hand and power tools, such as saws, drills, sanders, and nail guns. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, and specifications for carpentry projects. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot issues with wood materials and office furniture. Knowledge of wood finishing techniques, including staining, painting, and polishing. Strong attention to detail and the ability to produce high-quality work.
